These are the thoughts and musings of a group of critical media studies students from DePaul University. Some of us are new to the field but we are all scholars who critically consider the world around us, and are ready to contribute to the body of knowledge on how media interacts with and helps shape our cultural world.

It's Not Fun In Real Life
Shows like 16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom almost glamorize pregnancy at a young age. More people accept it or think it's even cool. Of course we all know people through high school or maybe even at college who have become pregnant and had a child, but, almost never are we friends with those people. We don't know what it's like. Sure we may see the FB posting of a happy mom and child but, is it really all that glamorous. I have two friends that dated the same guy, one last November and the other friend became very serious with him over summer. Without warning the guy stopped talking to both of them to end their relationship. Recently, he contacted my friend whom he dated over the summer apologizing and explaining that his son was born and didn't know how to deal with it, shocked, my friend never even realized he had gotten a girl pregnant. My other friend soon realized that he had been cheating on her all of last November with the girl who is now the mother of his child. We were discussing this over lunch one day about how we see depiction's of pregnancy through media and how it is made into a sitcom, or overly dramatized yet everything turns out ok. My two friends were upset, about the whole ordeal and they realized how off track this boys life will be now. When we see teen pregnancy unfold in real life it doesn't seem so funny or so overly glamorized. As for me personally, I don't think I can ever watch 16 and pregnant again.
