One of the most infamous shows that I can think of that focuses on stereotypes in the cartoon-style comedy of South Park. It is by far one of the most controversial programs on television today because of this main reason. But, through its controversy, it has arisen as a popular show for the adult audience because many people find humor in the topics that it brings up. It seems like since the shows inception, the creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have found a way to bash every single race, religion and political belief that has ever existed. They continue to push the boundaries each and every week when they release a new episode. While many people do find it funny how a group of grade school kids can get themselves into such situations and dialogue, there have been major opponents of the show as well. For instance, one episode, where the creators portrayed the Muslim prophet Muhammad in a bear costume, outraged the entire Muslim community because they consider Muhammad to be an immaterial being that should not be portrayed in such a way. As a result, major insurgent groups released death threats calling for the demise of the creators. This is only one instance of many that both Matt and Trey had to deal with throughout the show’s existence. It goes to show us that even though we may find humor in a stereotypical subject, other cultures can view it as an insult and take action against it. These stereotypes can be funny, until someone gets hurt.
These are the thoughts and musings of a group of critical media studies students from DePaul University. Some of us are new to the field but we are all scholars who critically consider the world around us, and are ready to contribute to the body of knowledge on how media interacts with and helps shape our cultural world.
