Jhally and the Modern Display of Racism

Throughout history the display and opinions regarding racism have been moulded into the suppressed and "enlightened" racism discussed in the Jhally article. It appears in the media, whether blatant or subtle: Summer's Eve Ad on the more blatant end. It is this uneven display of stereotypical messages fused with the image of "politically correct" modern media that has created the hushed attitude about the real consequence of history and current social situation. I personally believe it is of the utmost importance for popular media and television to work to it’s fullest to promote equality and abandon the skewed image of “otherness” expressed by Said. It is the reinforced notions of unequal and unknown culture that keeps society from being able to communicate and express the ideas and questions that revolve around race and understanding. The class discussion regarding certain characteristics or ways of acting/dressing being attributed to races is an example of how racially divided our opinions have become. It should no be a matter of color that explains the things you enjoy, but just a part of your personal image. Jhally’s explanation of The Cosby Show, both pro and con, give further understanding to this cultural shift and how our perceptions of what is displayed in media. Even though The Cosby Show portrayed an upper middle class African American family, the responses evoked ideas of further inequality and a justification to continue the stereotyping African Americans. This almost “glazed” over aspect of modern culture is what I find detrimental to the ability to continue shifting to a more accepting and global awareness that must be achieved.
