One of my favorite TV shows is Greys Anatomy and I can honestly say I don't think I have ever missed an episode. Ever since Greys Anatomy started in 2005, it has been a show with a lot of relationships, love drama, and sex. At times and in some episodes this series has been a little more sexual than other series on television, but for the most part it hasn't been over sexualized to the point where it is shocking.
This show definitely has its shocking moments, with its characters dying and an over-the-top medical emergency, but just a few weeks ago did I watch in a bit of shock about the sexual level. One of the main characters Christina Yang, played by Sandra Oh, is a married doctor who has recently found out that she is pregnant. Christina and her husband are arguing about her pregnancy because her husband wants the baby and Christina is adamant about not wanting to have children. Stereotypically we believe that someone who gets accidentally pregnant while married, will keep the baby because they are married, and specifically in this case both of the parents are successful doctors. Christina decided to get an abortion, which is something that is almost never really talked about on television, and even more shocking to see it on network television. The show took it another step further and showed Christina sitting on the doctors table talking about her abortion minutes before the procedure was about to start.
What was so shocking about this plot line was how open the show was while talking about abortions. I cannot ever remember hearing about abortions on TV and have felt that it is just the norm to not talk about it. After watching this show, I feel like society may be opening up to more controversial issues and letting viewers hear about it more.
