The New Girl is a new series launched by Fox that highlights a girl named Jess, played by popular actress Zooey Deschanel, who suffers a bad breakup with her boyfriend and needs a new place to move into. She ends up befriending three guys and moving into their four bedroom apartment. As one of the best sitcoms on TV, it focuses on relationships, breakup up, and moving on in life; something that we all experience. By making the issue of break ups satirical, it tries to make us look at our past relationships as just that, something in the past. It seems like every book, movie, TV show or song is about some sort of love and relationship with a significant other. The reason that so many forms of media exist pertaining to this is because this is undoubtedly an emotion that seems to control our lives. Whenever we have a good relationship or a bad one, we turn to media in order to try to make us feel better or relate to our experiences. The New Girl does just this and it does it better than almost any other show that I have seen. Although Jess’ relationship of six long years with boyfriend ends suddenly and tears her apart, it is the bond between her and her roommates that keeps her smiling. And even though the premise of the show is filled by sadness, the laughs that you will receive from it make you forget about the overall plot. If you are looking for a good, new comedy that will keep laughing throughout, check out this show. You won’t regret it.
These are the thoughts and musings of a group of critical media studies students from DePaul University. Some of us are new to the field but we are all scholars who critically consider the world around us, and are ready to contribute to the body of knowledge on how media interacts with and helps shape our cultural world.
