These are the thoughts and musings of a group of critical media studies students from DePaul University. Some of us are new to the field but we are all scholars who critically consider the world around us, and are ready to contribute to the body of knowledge on how media interacts with and helps shape our cultural world.

Old Spice: From funny to insulting
I use to love watching those funny Old Spice commercials. They started coming out a few years ago and they were hilarious! I even downloaded them on my phone to watch them in case I got bored on the bus ride home. After a while other companies were trying the same thing, to use humor to sell their product. Some worked, others weren’t so fortunate. I just recently came across a newer Old Spice skit on YouTube after typing in “Funny” in the search box. The first thing that came up was Old Spice Sea Captain, a sponsored ad my I add. I figured it was going to be funny so I decided to watch it. It starts off with a Sea Captain (derr) that has a bunch of medals on his shirt along with an octopus latched onto his shoulder walking through a doorway as he punches the octopus. He goes on saying that he isn’t things which he apparently is. Such as “I’m not a well decorated Sea Captain that battles monsters on a large nautical sea vessel” and so on. We can clearly see that he is what he says he isn’t; kinda funny, I laugh a little. Then he goes on to say some other stuff and says that he doesn’t have endless treasure flowing out of his pockets (he does) and he sits next to what they feel is an attractive woman. She says something like “don’t tell him that I noticed” [the endless treasure] and they both start laughing and a few seconds later the room fills with treasure and they stay start choking on it. Again, kinda funny so I laugh a little. The ad ends with “Smell Better than Yourself”… what the hell does that mean?! Do people better than me smell like Old Spice? Do I have to smell like Old Spice so that people can perceive me as being something better than I already am? What’s wrong with me now? I thought only old people wore Old Spice, I guess I was wrong, they must have just been better than me. Dang.
