And The Winner Is...

Over the weekend I watched the Emmy’s with my friends. I love the Emmy’s!!! While I watched it I realized a lot of hegemony. All the celebrities had to represent themselves with a brand. The brand was whatever designer they were wearing that night. From jewelry to shoes, you had to know who you were representing. You did not see anyone walking down the carpet with a dress from Macy’s. Some celebrities, who were not as well known, even talked about how they begged certain designers to let them wear their “name”. Designers want to have a good representation because it will get more people to buy from them. Therefore less popular celebrities have a harder time getting what they want. They are branding and representing these designers to give them better business. Overall it was kind of presented to us like a “reality” show. Watching the celebrities being interviewed walking down the red carpet, trying to see who they “really” are, and waiting for someone to make a fool of themselves. It intrigues audiences because this is the life of the rich and famous. We are relating to these upper class people because that is a goal that we have or know that “fame” is just a fantasy world we will never be a part of. Overall the Emmy's are a ploy for us to want to be luxurious and see if our favorite show actually does win the award.

  1. I'm sad to realize this is completely true. There is a whole pre-show dedicated to basically interviewing celebrities on what they are wearing. I know I've been asked things like would you rather be beyonce or katy perry? and its all in joke but if you think about it these questions are asked because things like the Emmy's make us want to be part of this elite society.
