These are the thoughts and musings of a group of critical media studies students from DePaul University. Some of us are new to the field but we are all scholars who critically consider the world around us, and are ready to contribute to the body of knowledge on how media interacts with and helps shape our cultural world.

Power Rangers & Baby...
When I baby-sat my two cousin last week, it got me thinking about my childhood. My boy cousin Joel brought some power ranger DVD's to watch and Sara had the Baby-Sitting club book. Although I not a hardcore fan of P.R., I can remeber the times when me and my cousins would agrue over which one of us, is the pink Power Rnager, of course I always lost, because they were older then me, and in those situation I never won. I forgot to ask Joel which P.R. he perferred but with the ALL ooh's and ah's coming from him, I suppose it would be quite diffuclt for him to decide. Sara on the other hand did have something I was a die hard fan of and it was the Baby-Sitting Club, I had all there books and somehow I still believe it somewhere in the house, but reading the book with her brought back fond memories and new memeories that I will now have with her.

Where were you....
Where were you when you heard about the passing of Heavy D ? It only recently that we wrapped up the trial for the Legendary King of Pop, now we are faced with another tragedy. As I think about his sudden death I begin to reminisce about the days I would have the radio blasting when his song "Big Daddy" would aired. Thinking about him got me reminiscence about the other beloved artists we lost. I can remember staying at the bus stop with my mom and brother singing to Aaliyah "Miss You", and when I would sit with my grandmother and look at the Golden Girls and Bernie Mac reruns. So many great entertainer have past away, but as long as we remember the as they were they will always be with us in spirit.

Where would we be!?!
Yesterday my kitchen sink started acting funny so I called my handy man. He said he wont be able to examine the pipes until Saturday. Being 65 years-old, he is a self-employed man, and have been doing these blue collar work for a long time. He used to bring his nephew alone, but he let him go a couple of years back, saying he was slowing him down, yet the nephew was in his early forties. Yet, at his age (65) he is still sharp as a whistle. So as I watch the news and these debates about "Class Warfare" I wonder where he would be if he was much younger and was working for someone else instead of himself. The media talks about the 1% against the 99.99% or Herman Cain nine, nine, nine plan, and all I can think about is where would we be if we didn't have Blue-collar workers, better yet, working class people period. We have these perceptions of the working class people but who do you called when your having trouble with your plumbing?

Hypnotic
Women and their curves have all the guys going wild. For two days the topic of discussion has been the female’s physique. To elaborate, Monday I read Crossing Over the Latin Body, in my Media and Cinema studies class, a chapter that emphasis Jennifer Lopez body rather than her work. Today in my Intercultural Communication class, we discuss how the women, in the Disney films, body changed from conservative to exotic, as the female characters go from being White to people of color. Last but not least, while I was visiting my Grandparents I saw a commercial for “Elephant Insurance.” In this commercial all I can remember is a woman in her bra and panties, trying to cover up as much as she could with one hand, while talking about being stuck in a storm because of car troubles in the other hand. I believe the wind caused her to lose her clothes. Anyways, after watching this commercial I tried to figure out the purpose of making her partially dressed. Then it came to me, males… males are their targeted audience not females. Guys go into a trance, as if they being hypnotize, when a partially naked women is on display. After being submerged into a two day marathon of women bodies, all I want to know is why and how, did we successful come to a point where she is NOT a she, but body parts, to be manipulated and used?

The Seducee & The Seducer
Sunday I watched a rerun of Friends where Joey had decided he would take a quick nap in Rachel room because his duck was sick in his. When he tried to get comfortable on her bed, he discovered a book. After he read the first two page he discovered that this book wasn’t just some romance novel but a erotica. Being intrigue he kept reading, but as he read he couldn’t believe Rachel had such a thing. Therefore when Rachel came home he was started to quote things from the reading, at first she didn’t caught on but then she ask where he heard that from he told her it was from here prono. Attempting to deny the genre of the book she changed her mind and decided to embrace it for what it was an erotica. The next day Joey who told Ross about the book, both teased her. So instead of constantly defending the book she decided to change tactics. When Joey and Rachel was home alone she decided she would pursue Joey the women did the man in the book. As she started to seduce Joey, telling him she wanted him and come show me what type of man you really are. Backing out like Rachel knew he would his demeanor changed from cool and in control to sappy like a lost puppy. He couldn’t handle it when she became the hunter and he the prey, but was just fine when things were the other way around away. Therefore my question is why is it that some guys are confident when they are the seducer but when they become a seducee they get scared?

America
Millions of people are out of work, some of the people are apart of my family. My time spent over my Granparent's who watch the news religiously showed me just how vicious our world could be. For example the Job plan President Obama presented. I believed it was mention on Hardball with Chris Matthews, that some people rejected the plan because it was "Obama Plan".When asked if their are parts in the plan they did not agree with, they replied that their are not. They like the detail of the plan but do not like that it was President Obama who presented the plan. As I stated above millions of people is out work, and a solution have been proposed but because of the presenter of this soultion is America President, some people have great disdain for it.
The next matter that drew my attention is some weeks back during the republican debate. The matter of health care came up. The candidates were given as scenario of a man at the age of thirty in perfect health was hurt in a car accident. He is rushed to the hosptial but is uninsured. Do you save him or let him die. A person in the audience ssaid let him die and the crowd began clapping. This man could be saved, especially since he was in perfect health before the incident. How could a person be such curel. America is known for their indivualistic trait, but to agree to allowed a person die because he do not not have insurance is absurd. Dosen't the preamble of the consitution start as WE the people, but where are the we !

eyes wide open
Lately I have been noticing a lot of hegemony. It reminds of how you buy a new car and all of a sudden you see people with the same model as you. Once you really open your eyes you notice the things that has been staring you right in the face.Which leads me back to hegemony. I didn't put any thought into the concept of hegemony until it was brought up as a discussion for class. So when I was at home watching old movies that were made in the late 80's and 90's I came across a movie called L.A. Confidential. It was about a police officer fighting for justice even when, his fellow officer was aganist him.He kept fighting for justice even when his superior officer tried his hardest to deter him, because he was one of the key players in the crime that was occuring in their city. He signified hope. Hope that one day the world would be full of righteous people such as himself.
